NRHS National Convention Night Photo Shoot and Roundhouse Tour July 7,8, 2005.

The NRHS National Convention in Portland, OR, hosted by the Pacific Northwest Chapter, had a full schedule of events, two taking place at the Brooklyn Roundhouse. A night photo shoot took place Thursday the 7th, from 10pm to 2am. Roundhouse tours commenced on Friday the 8th, beginning at 8:30am.

Night Photo Shoot

The NRHS night photo shoot involved a couple of busloads of people with expensive cameras, a coordinator and two assistants with powerful flash guns, enough roundhouse people to operate two steam locomotives, run a turntable, and deal with other logistics. When a locomotive was positioned for a shot, on the turntable for instance, the coordinator would count down on his megaphone and tell photographers when to open their shutters, the two assistants would then "paint" the loco with light from a series of flashes, and the coordinator would give the command to close the shutters.

Roundhouse Tours.

Friday morning, the night photo shoot ended at 2am and the busloads of the NRHS members for the daytime tour of the Brooklyn roundhouse began arriving at 8:30am. The routine was as follows - alternately, the SP 4449 and the SP&S 700, each parked outside the roundhouse, would back onto the turntable, be spun around and return to the parking place.

After good weather all week, we finally get rain on Friday about noon. But that doesn't stop folks from enjoying the roundhouse sights. Photo by Terry Thompson.
